Beenleigh Distillery— distillery profile

Founded in the 1800's, Beenleigh is Australias oldest registered distillery. The distillery uses molasses made from sugarcane sourced in Queensland, and operates a copper pot still.

Although the distillery has had a rocky past (it was silent from 1969 to 1972 and from 1999 to 2004, and there were quite a lot of takeovers), business nowadays seems to have picked up.

In december 2015 the distillery opened a brand new $3.46 million dollar visitor center. The distillery offers guided tours, either with or without a rum tasting.

Interesting fact: the original stills came from the ‘SS Walrus’, a steam operated floating distillery that offered a distilling service for the numerous sugar plantations along the Brisbane river.
