Although historically there is not much of a rum culture in the Netherlands, rum is steadily gaining popularity. There are also some Dutch distilleries that have started making rum.
Traditionally, the white rum is most popular in the Netherlands, but this is mainly because the many people only drink their rum in a mixer called BaCo (Bacardi Cola) which has become somewhat of a national drink.
Things are changing though. With the advent of single malt whisky and craft beers, dark rums are gaining popularity.
Retailers in the Netherlands generally offer a small selection of dark rums, with brands like Havana Club and Diplomatico being readily available everywhere. The ‘lesser known’ brands are slowly gaining popularity.
