The best known rum in Ecuador is Ron San Miguel. Although the are brand is pretty open on where they mature their rums (in the mountains near Cuenca) the whereabouts of the actual distillery are somewhat of an enigma.
Because food regulation is pretty strict in Ecuador, the labels on rum bottles need to contain a list of ingredients, which makes for some really interesting small-print.
The ingredients list of many of the low budget rums reads like this:
