Chili— country profile

Although they do grow sugarcane there, the country doesn't produce much rum. The only Chilean rum we know of is El Gaitero.

Rum seems is pretty popular in Chili. Sales have overtaken that of Pisco in the supermarket, and almost all supermarkets offer a wide selection of aged rum.

White rum is also readily available everywhere, but the selection is smaller. Popular brands you will find in almost all supermarkets include: Flor de Caña, Ron Abuelo and Havana Club.

Chile doesn’t seem to produce much rum though. The only Chilean rum we found on our travels was ‘El Gaitero’. According to the locals this is an aged rum, that has been around since the stoneage.

The country also produces Arrack, and a spirit that is a mix of grape and sugarcane distillate which is quite popular as a mixer.
